Valentine’s Day usually goes hand-in-hand with romantic dinners, roses, and chocolate-filled hearts. But for widows and widowers, the day can also bring an unwelcomed reminder of love lost. That’s why one Nashville-based nonprofit is stepping up to change that, and you can help.

Founded in 2022 by Angie and Mike Hurst, Brighten Up Nashville delivers fresh flower arrangements and gift bundles to widows and widowers across the Greater Nashville area every Valentine’s Day. This year marks their fourth round of deliveries, with a goal of 1,000—more than double last year.

“At Brighten Up, we believe Valentine’s Day is a time to remind everyone they’re loved and cared for, especially those who may be missing a late partner,” said Angie Hurst, founder of Brighten Up. “Our goal is to bring a little extra joy to widows and widowers in Nashville, letting them know they’re deeply valued, cherished, and never forgotten on this tender day.”

The centerpiece of Brighten Up’s efforts is the delivery of beautiful floral arrangements crafted with care and accompanied by special gift bundles created in partnership with local businesses like Chef’s Market, Little Things Studio, Prickly Pear Coffee, and Able. But it’s not just the gifts that make this initiative special—it’s the people behind every bouquet.

Volunteers are crucial to the equation, and Brighten Up is calling on the community to help bring this year’s vision to life. There are countless ways to get involved, from arranging flowers to delivering them in person. Donations of flowers, funds, or time ensure that no nominee is left out.

Speaking of, nominations are open online through February 7 should you wish to recognize a widow or widower in your life. For more information, visit brightenupnashville.com.
