I Like My Nights Old-Soul, Low-Lit, and Properly Poured

Underlit, contemplative, and comfortably hushed–these are the words that come to mind when I’m searching for an evening with a little more of a refined and cinematic cocktail sipping experience. In the South, where dive bars, breweries, and sports pubs make up a good portion of the beverageries, we’ve done the research (and sips of approval) to find the best cocktail bars where the vibe is just right. So, as you begin planning your romantic eventings, singleness celebrations, and galentine’s gatherings, plan a trip to visit one of (or all of) these Modern South-approved Southern moody cocktail bars.

Artillery Bar | Savannah, Georgia

In Savannah, the Artillery Bar’s magic begins even before you cross the threshold. As you approach, the breathtaking building boasts gothic influences and features swags, trefoil arches, and beautifully sculpted columns. Inside, you’ll find candlelit chandeliers, vintage marble tables, and design concepts that pay homage to late 19th-century romanticism. If citrus tickles your fancy, I’d recommend ordering the My Fair Lady cocktail, a vodka-based citrus cocktail with whispers of vanilla.

The Raven Book Lounge | Brentwood, Tennessee

Inspired by famous author Edgar Allan Poe, the father of mood and macabre ambience himself, The Raven is a highly anticipated bar, bookstore, and lounge opening soon in the suburbs of Nashville. Dark tones, cozy fireplaces, and an overarching inspiration from gothic literature make this the perfect place to sit and contemplate. Bring a friend, a date, or just a book and enjoy sipping on one of their literary cocktails.

The Apothecary | Fondren, Mississippi

Living up to its name, The Apothecary is located inside a classic soda shop-drugstore known as Brent’s Drugs in the retro Fondren District near Jackson. Keeping in touch with its vintage past, at this bar, you’re served “prescriptions” not cocktails. If you’re feeling a little afflicted, I’d recommend the St. Germain Cobbler, a blend of elderflower liqueur, sweet vermouth, sea salt, and grapefruit–I promise you’ll find it’s just what the doctor ordered.

Juniper | Birmingham, Alabama

If you’re looking for a place to take the girls, Juniper is certainly a choice selection. This Victorian era-styled bar is filled with botanical inspiration and jewel tones galore, making the atmosphere perfectly cozy and admirable. Better yet, when the weather is right, their outdoor courtyard could be akin to the 19th-century gardens described in our favorite Jane Austen books, and it’s perfect for sipping with a view (or pretending you’re Elizabeth Bennett). When deliberating on what to order, I’d recommend the Buzz Word–a peachy, sweet, gin cocktail sure to keep you keen.

The Whiskey Lounge at Henry’s on the Market | Charleston, South Carolina

Known as The Whiskey Lounge, and found on the second floor of Henry’s on the Market, this Charleston speakeasy transports you right back to the 1930s. Exposed brick, dark wood stains, and glowing chandeliers amp up both the Southern charm and mood factor. If you visit on a Friday or Saturday evening after 10 p.m. for a nightcap, you’ll be treated to live music, which I’d recommend pairing with their Lowcountry Limeade: a blend of vodka, elderflower liqueur, and lime.

The Hitchcock | Nashville, Tennessee

Vintage-framed photographs, dim lighting, and cascading drapes make this new Nashville bar the perfect blend of romance and atmosphere. The setting, crafted by an actual Hollywood set designer, sends you to the “Golden Age of Hollywood,” which could not be a more perfect homage to its namesake, Alfred Hitchcock. Enjoy (broodingly) sipping on The Hitchcock’s Dark Negroni: gin, palo santo, strawberry amaro, and sweet vermouth.

The Press Room | New Orleans, Louisiana

Located in the lobby of the Eliza Jane Hotel near the French Quarter in New Orleans, The Press Room is bustling at all times and is quoted to be where “library meets lounge.” Rich colors, space to lounge by the fire, and timeless French Creole elegance make this the perfect option for a moody night out. For a smoky twist, try the Puerto Angel, a cocktail made of mezcal, amaro, and ruby port.

The Roosevelt | Richmond, Virginia

Though this spot is technically a full-service restaurant, the atmospheric interior and beautifully designed bar make it the perfect place to sip or grab a bite (which I highly recommend). Revering its namesake (FDR), The Roosevelt’s interior fits the bill as a pre-World War II Southern-era locale and feels like a leap back in time. If you’re lucky enough to catch a seat at the bar, have the And Wanda cocktail, a unique cocktail featuring vodka, sweet vermouth, almond liqueur, lime, and spiced cranberry bitters.
