How to Set a Star-Spangled Tablescape for Fourth of July

Featured Image: Bailey Lou King

Before the burgers hit the grill and the sparklers are lit, the best way to set the mood for a fabulous Fourth of July celebration is with the perfect tablescape.

This July, it felt fitting to lean into all the classics to properly celebrate America’s 250th birthday. With nods to the past, we embraced the deep blue and red found on our flag, tableware with subtle nods to America’s history, and so much more. The best part of this tablescape? It’s mostly paper, making your post BBQ cleanup that much simpler.

Red and White Striped Paper Runner

We used a few pieces from Hester & Cook’s Fourth of July collection from last year, but this year’s collection is even cuter. Using a paper runner like this is the perfect way to speed up clean up and take away the stress of Bomb Pop dribble staining your linens.

Available at Hester & Cook here (or find the blue version of the red checker runner we used, here).

Paper Place Mats

Another wonderful paper feature, these placemats layer perfectly with any tablescape adding all the color and class without the bulk of conventional placemats. Hester & Cook has several beautiful prints this year, so be sure to check them all out to decide what compliments your vision best.

Independence Blue Paper Salad Plates

Featuring the very place where the Declaration of Independence was signed and inspired by your grandmother’s favorite vintage plates (except these don’t break), it doesn’t get much more patriotic than these paper plates. Use them for salad, dessert… or seconds on dessert.

Available at MK Home & Art Co. here.

Homestead Red Paper Dinner Plates

This set of vintage inspired paper plates is inspired by the generations who built the foundation for America. These plates are sturdy, easy to put out and clean up, and make the best addition to an Americana tablescape.

Serving & Style Tips

Paper, Paper, Paper

Stressing out about guests breaking your wedding dinnerware is out and paper tablescapes are in (in case we haven’t made that clear already). Swapping out linens and crockery for chic paper goods is affordable, makes for a quick clean up, and eliminates the need to walk around with your tide pen.

Always Have a Themed Beverage

Never underestimate the power of a signature cocktail (or mocktail) to serve at your events. For our Americana theme this year, we the made Bomb Pop Mimosas by simply sticking one of these iconic frozen treats into our glass and pouring bubbly over the top. This bev can easily be made a mocktail or kid-friendly by using lemon-lime soda, sparkling water, lemonade, etc. in the place of bubbly.

It’s All in the Small Details

Tiny touches add loads of personality to tablescapes. For this tablescape, we stuck small American flags into our floral display, added a build-your-own s’more station, and even made sure the colors of our bubbly bottles and fresh fruit were on theme. Tying color palette appropriate ribbon around glassware stems or napkins bundles, including on-theme place cards, and leaning into your theme with all your components are a few more ways you can elevate your tablescape.
